A Look at the Colorful History of Bingo

Today, one of the more popular gambling games known to various people is the game of bingo. Just like any other casino game, its history dates back to the olden times.

The origin of the game of Bingo can be traced back to a kind of lottery game played during the 16th century in Italy. The game is still very popular to this very day. From that country the game was introduced to France in the late 1770s, where it became known as Le Lotto, which used to be an exclusive game for the elite class of France. In addition, 19th century Germany utilized a bingo variation, which was intended for students in order to learn skills in math, spelling, and history.

In 1929, the Italian lottery game was introduced in the United States through a carnival touring group traveling around Germany. The game was initially called beano and was played in different carnivals. Using a set of numbered discs, the players would use beans to mark out the called number on their cards. As soon as all the called numbers have been completed, players call out "Beano." While the game was a crowd drawer in country fairs, beano was used as a means to source out money for charitable projects during the 1930s. the practice of using the game as a fund-raiser has carried on to this very day.

The changing of the name of the game from "beano" to "bingo" was credited to Edwin S. Lowe, an account executive for a New York toy company. He accidentally overheard another person calling out bingo rather than beano. With the help of a math professor from Columbia University by the name of Carl Leffler, they made an attempt to increase the number of possible combinations in a set of bingo cards.

In 1960, the game of Bingo found its way in the shores of the United Kingdom with the ratification of the Gaming Act. Furthermore, the law allows member establishments to provide the game of bingo among their games. Consequently, another law was passed in 1968 this time allowing clubs to offer a certain cash prize through tabletop slots and likewise put up a Gaming Board whose aim is to supervise the action of the Bingo clubs, which are gaining ground in terms of popularity. Due to the highly successful bingo venture, the decade of the 1980s marked a proliferation of bingo halls in major towns, which still stands to this very day.
